Perhaps you should leave it for a while and try again sometime; it is the type of book that you need to be feeling receptive to, otherwise you can't enjoy it.
John Kennedy Toole killed himself before this book was published (there are many theories why); it later won the Pulitzer Prize. Yes, read the book sometime, I don't think you'll regret it.
