Sylvia Plath and her obsession with peanuts?!

I have just finished reading Plath's novel The Bell Jar and earlier this year I read and studied her poem Lady Lazarus and I am amazed at the frequent and continuous references to peanuts. The aforementioned poem has just one mention but the novel has dozens. Does anyone have any idea why Plath chose to feature peanuts so prominently?!!

Probably because she was American. Reminds me of when we worked there and every chocolate bar in the vending machine had peanuts in it. In fact, peanuts seemed to be a feature of a lot of foodstuffs.
When you've read a bit more Plath stuff, you'll more than likely notice the frequent and continuous references to death, and the peanut thing will fade into the background...
