Dental Records

How are people identified by dental records, where would you start to look for the appropriate dentist....?

That only happens where the dental records CAN be found, they are not always available as dentists are only required to keep them for 2 years.

I imagine in most cases, someone who might know or know of the victim may be able to provide preliminary information to narrow the search down.

I always thought this worked the other way around, in that the police/forensics 'post' the dental records, and dentists will then check if it looks like their work on one of their patients. If so, they check their records fully, and report to the police/forensics if it is one of their patients. I could very easily be wrong in these thoughts.
