I'm trying to trace a book I read as a child...

...So far, I've established more or less it was written by Maurice Sendak and illustrated by John Jude Palencar. I remember it being about a changeling, a baby that's been carried off by fairies or Little People, who leave an ugly fairy replacement, and somebody trying to rescue the baby. I distinctly remember the illustrations of someone in grey hooded robes. Please help.
