There was a book which came out about year or two ago which was basically a short summary of modern history. It apparently did really well but i cant remeber the title or the author

Any ideas?

was it the History of the World in 10.5 weeks by iain banks/
that sounds uncommonly like History of the World in 10.5 Chapters by Julian Barnes, but that may not actually be what you were thinking of, in which case sorry not to be more helpful
Surely you mean A Short History Of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson ?

Incidentally there's no such Iain Banks book - please get your facts right when answering questions.
I remember reading about a small book of history that a father had written, initially for his kids.
I think it started with him drawing a big date line for his kids to learn, in chronological order.
When visitors came to his house they all said it was areally good idea and that it was a shame that children today didn't learn history in date order.
He and his wife decided to turn it into a small book.

I can't remember the name of it but i remeber at the time thinking it was areally good idea - i wish i'd written it down!

I've tried google but i don't seem to be able to find it!
sorry quizmonster at five to one in the morning after being awake nearly15 hours I tend to muddle stuff up, I should have turned around and looked at my copy on the shelf instead of relying on my addled brain. I must do better.
