Well I'm currently stripping a fireplace (1930s) that I thought was cast iron but is actually some kind of plaster. I'm using a stripper called Nitromors which can go through loads of layers of paint at a time. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the plaster. I'd try it on a tiny area of the statue underneath where is won't show maybe to see if this works. It doesn't work on emaulsion though.
