Munch pinted it after walking along a bridge with two friends - the scene depicted by the two gentlemen in top hats - when he felt a peculiar sensation, the air turned blood red, and "a scream passed through nature" which promoted him to create his famous work. The appeal of the picture is its simple rendition of a complicated internal sensation, hich strikes a chord in anyone with the sensitivity to understand the feelings of hopelessness and fear depicted in that surreal figure. Maybe comfort is taken from that fact that Munch has connected with large numbers of people - and that is the purpose, and joy, of art.
