Question set by Fay Weldon in The Independent's Christmas Quiz. I've tried the Internet and have found out the name of the architect but I just can't find anything about the novelist.
Many thanks for any help offered with this very difficult poser.

Could be Thomas Hardy .
His successful practice drew the attention of the young Thomas Hardy .. Hardy's training as a Gothic draughtsman was a strong recommendation to Blomfield, in whose office he worked on his arrival in London in 1862.

Bit more info
It is questionable whether Hardy
assisted Arthur Blomfield in the building of Oxfords Radcliffe Infirmary chapel in 1864 - while Beatty
(Introduction to The Architectural Notebook of Thomas Hardy) accepts the notion, Gittings (Young
Thomas Hardy) rejects it.
