Thames&Hudson Art Quiz Question E: Who painted this funeral ? The style looks like Turner's, is the location St Paul's ? Was the deceased Nelson...and what vacancy did his death leave...??
I don't think it's Nelson as his funeral was held on water, on the Thames. I thought it might be Wellington, but if you look at the picture carefully there's a big statue towards the right and I don't recognise that as anywhere in London, also at the back there is a huge flight of steps that I keep thinking I ought to recognise.
Thanks for pointing out this Quiz which I had missed.
Looks like early 19thC from red uniform in front, and also looks a bit like steps of St Pauls tho' fuzzy.
If it is Nelson, surprising no mention of painting on Web, and also his cortege had six horses, and I can only see four.
I had wondered about Lord Palmerston .. will keep trying.
To all that helped...
Yes...It IS Turner's painting of the funeral of Sir Thomas Lawrence....done from memory, apparently. The painting does appear in the book.'Turner in his Time', one of the prize books in this quiz.
