paddington?
James Micheners' mega novels would fit your criteria but the closest he came to Peru was 'Mexico'.
Paddington Bear was the first thing that sprang to my mind too! Please join with me and wish Paddington a Happy Birthday this Wednesday. Sorry I can't think of a single novel regarding Peru but you could try Kathy Reichs' Grave Secrets' set in Guatemala, more a thriller but using the massacres that occurred during the Civil War as the basis for the story.
Have a look at http://www.frommers.com/destinations/peru/08140235

where travel-book publishers, Frommers, recommend reading for prospective visitors to Peru. Lonely Planet guidebooks also usually contain a section recommending fiction.
'The Celestial Prophecy' by James Redfield - quite spiritual - but he describes Peru very well indeed - at least i think its set in Peru!
