Raising to a higher level or viewing things from a different perspective I imagine. I'm very interested in opinions, and artists who use stairs as an icon in thier work. Thanks

Read a piece recently by Marguerita D'Arcy in which a ladder was very aptly used in n improvised drama workshop. Cannot pinpoint reference but when/if I do I will enter here.

M.C.Escher uses stairs a lot in his art work:

concave and convex - 1955
beledere - 1958
high and low - 1947
relativity - 1953
house of stairs - 1951 - my personal favorite!

to name but a few of his pieces containing stairs!
his artwork is about optical illusions, a constant cycle.

hope that helps!

Duchamp's Nude Descending A Staircase is quite an iconic painting in it's own right.
