OK, I'm a big fan of Hardy and my nominations are: The mayor of Castorbridge, Tess O the Dubervilles and Jude the Obscure
They are so wonderful I must give you 3!! 'Under the Greenwood Tree' his first novel, and full of humour. 'The Trumpet-Major, I practically read this in one go. My last nomination is one that is often overlooked being hidden in his 'Wessex Tales' short stories, and that is 'A Melancholy Hussar'
Also try "The Woodlanders", which I think you'll enjoy. According to the blurb on the back of my copy, Hardy eventually came to consider this his favourite tale.

Many thanks for suggestions....am currently reading The Mayor of Casterbridge (brill) and am watching Tess on video over the weekend....Was suprised to see the words Hagrid and Dumbledore on the same page in The Mayor of Casterbridge....thought they were workds invented by J.K. Rowling.!!!!!
If you'd like to look at one that most people seem never to have heard of, let alone read, try "Two on a Tower".. I thought it was well-thought-out, beautifully paced and written, and intensely moving (if you like doomed romance, of course..!!) Simply magical ...!!
