First Edition

Sorry if I sound a bit dense but how can you tell if a book is a first edition?

In the front of the bok there will be numbers e.g. 9. 8. 7. etc if there isn't any numbers like I have described it is a first edition and also at the front will give you the years of each edition. I hope I explained it clearly, you aren't dense, I didn't realise until recently and I'm 39!
