Does anyone know if there are a range of guide books especially developed for young people? I am looking for one for a 21 year old who will be spending a year in LA

Cna't think of any specific ones, when I was there I had a Lonely Planet guide but the best information I got was from other travellers (i was staying in hostels). They could tell me about places not in the guide books and advise on whether something was worth doing or not, priceless info.
Lonely Planets and Rough Guides have lots for young people (though they're not as backpacker-oriented as they used to be), but for spending a whole year you'll probably need more than just a travel guide. Use one for the first month or so but after that just talk to the locals about what's worth doing.
Time Out are usually aimed at the young and adventurous with plenty of entertainment and culture advice.

You can start with this guide, then once there they will be able to pick up a weekly or monthly review to find out whats on etc.
