Childs book, Highland Clearances

My son read this book at school about 1990-ish. It was the story of a little girl and her family who were forced off their croft during the Highland Clearances, they moved to the slums of Glasgow before boarding ship for Canada. Also goes on to describe their first years in Canada and the hardships they underwent. I found it fascinating and couldn't put it down even tho it was aimed at 10 year olds! I was a great story but also gave a lot of historical, social and political information of what was going on in the 1800s. Can anyone remember the author or what it was called.

spooky! I found this book today while I was cleaning out a cupboard - The Desperate Journey by Kathleen Fidler.

Thanks all. I read quite a bit of John Prebble years ago but now I'm in the mood to read him again. Have just ordered some K Fidler books and no doubt I'll read those too!

Have you read / did you order 'The Boy With the Bronze Axe' by Ms. Fidler?

I unfortunately didn't read any of her books when I was young but after my hubby raved on and on for years about having read this brilliant book at primary school I bought him a copy and promptly read it myself lol. He was right, even as an adult its a great story and I highly recommend it.
