Terry Pratchett is the Status Quo of the Literary World, in that he has written the same book over and over and over again (possibly with the addition of one 'punne or play on words' each time), and people keep buying it while he sits on his big pile of money and laughs. Discuss. Not too Heatedly.

Read mall gods... you're right, that one was one that I quite enjoyed - gods disappearing when no one believes in them is a really interesting idea. I read quite a lot of his books a few years ago, so I think I 'get it' but I just don't find it that funny. As I tried to suggest in the title, I was just feeling a little Machiavellian whn I wrote the question to see if I could get anyone going. Which I think I might have done! As far as Carpe Jugulum is concerned, one of the main characters is Mightily Oats, who's a trainee priest rather than monk. But I maintain that he starts out not very good at what he does but succeeds despite his cowardice. But I retract my comment about Vimes. You are quite correct.
