I just finished reading The Book of The Dead by Patricia Cornwell and I have to say I was very disappointed with it. Any fans of Ms Cornwell shouldn't bother wasting their money on it.I have read all of her other books and this is by far the worst of them.
I think she ran out of steam and ideas about 6 books ago - her ego got in the way of her imagination. How many re-hashes does she think her readership will accept?
I also abandoned Patricia Cornwell some years ago.The last book that was any good was Black Notice. Her follow up The Last Precinct appeared to be a bit left over from the previous book but dragged into a full novel. I also found her final Andy Brazil book isle of Dogs totally unreadable.
Another author that has gone off the boil is John Grisham. There was an early sign when he wrote The Chamber which had no discernable story. You waited and waited for the twist - and nothing happened.
Agree wholeheartedly with all the above . I have found her last three books totally awful . She was good ..her first books were great but lately they seem too plodding and full of all this high tech stuff and here niece and the ridiculous escapades she gets up too are so boring .And all that business with Benton Wesley ..unbelievable ..it was like something out of Dallas !
I have almost given up on contemporary american authors. I can't give any specifics, but I get a very 'empty' feeling when reading them, perhaps they are becoming too formulaic, writing what they (or publishers) think the reader wants.
Also, as I prefer thrillers, american novels can be very bloodthirsty. A bit like rading a slasher movie.
Gave up on her after Hornets Nest which I thought was rubbish. I was very dissapointed as I had been quite the avid reader prior to it.
I think most talented people have a limit to talent or ideas. Stephen King seems to have come to the end of the road as well, which is a huge pity. I'll just have to go and find another good author.
I'm unhappy to hear that, Daffy.
Like you I have read all her books. I presumed with Scarpetta being in the book it would be a good read. I have ordered it from the local library for 60p, but I was tempted to buy it. I'll just wait then.
Have you read any of Tess Gerritsen? She is excellent and keeps in touch.. She's got a new book coming out on January 18th called "The Bone Garden".
