Dumbledore is really on the Voldermorts side and Had brought Snape in to hogwarts to Take harry to Voldermort. Duh. No one has a real answer. Rowling said that this would all be revealed in books 6 and 7
I wish I knew. Probably has to do with trust crap.
Sirius did say that severus was up to his ears in thae dark arts and he's forever been applying for the role of DADA teacher...perhaps he became a death eater but then realized only when it was too late that it was a mistake and helped dumbledore spy on voldemort that's why he was cleared.
I think Snape is on Harry's side because at the end of the 4th book, Voldemort said some of his Death Eater betrayed him and Snape must be one of them. He can't return to Voldemort's side now because Voldemort would kill him.
Maybe Snape is uder Dumbledore's imperius spell.
Maybe Snape betrayed Voldemort to save Dumbledore's life and now Dumbledore trusts him or something like that.
But if Snape can't return to Voldemort, where does he go when Dumbedore says 'you know what you must do'?
My guess: Snape spyed on V for Dumbledore during first reign of terror- was not found out & is spying again - answered the call of his Dark Mark Tatoo when V returned & is playing 2X agent for Dumbledore. Big twist at some point when it will look like he is loyal to V, but will save Harry & probably have to sacrifice himself to do it.
Personally, I think that during the first reign of Voldemort's terror Snape was a full blown death eater. I think something big happened to change him completely.I can only guess at hints that JKRowling has given in interviews and I think it has something to do with Lily Evans Potter. JKR has also said that Snape had been in love at one time (or was it that someone had loved him?) anyway... she said that because of that it made Snape more culpable to his actions.Whatever it is, it must be very believeable. Snape, from the sound of it, has helped Dumbledore many times-to survive himself and to help others on the 'good' side to survive. I think his loyalty is genuine.
