It seems as though there are as many explanations of the allusions and symbolism as there are commentators
"Et in Arcadia Ego" can be translated two ways
"I, Death, am also in Arcadia"
or
"I used to dwell in Arcadia as well"

In a French town called Rennes-le-Chateaux, a priest supposedly found some parchments hidden in a pillar at his church. Onbe of these was in code and when decoded mentioned Poussin. The priest visited the Louvre and purchased a copy of the painting (amongst others). On his return to R-L-C, he started to act strangely and acquired unexplained riches. Some believe that some clues in the paintings directed him to treasure of some discription. Interestingly, there is a current attempt to break a code contained on a monument at Shugborough in the UK, which also features a reverse carving of the Shepherds of Arcadia.
