name of a cat in a book

does anyone know the name of the cat in a book. i can't think of the name of the book but its about a boy who became homeless. there is this guy who is a bit mental and he goes around killing homeless people, he has a cat and i thought the cat had a really cool name like sophos or something but i can't remeber what it was. it deffinatly began with an 'S'.
