i got totally engrossed in the film of a Town Like Alice this afternoon, the black and white version. Sadly though, I had to pick Mini Boo up from nursery and missed the ending :-(
I got as far as the women coming into a village with Japanese women in befriending them. What happend from there onwards please? Did Jean and Joe get together? And I also missed why he thought she was married?
you mean Peter Finch and Virgina McKenna? She's told he survived being crucified and goes to Alice, but finds he's gone to London to look for her; they're reunited at Darwin airport, as you do
I assume you saw this on one of the "4" channels. It seems to be a stock film which is repeated from time to time on 4, more4 or filmfour, so it will likely be on again soon.
With a bit of luck, i'll catch the ending another time then. If it's on at same time again, Mini Boo will have to stay at nursey until it's finished- heh!
Read the book, its explains it all. As it happens, I think this is a good film adaptation, nothing like as bad as the Gregory Peck version of 'On the Beach'. If you like Nevil Shute books I would recommend these two and 'Trustee from the Toolroom' which is one of my fave books and much better than the title might suggest!
Read the book - it is just fabulous! Or if you can get hold of the BBC adaptation from a few years back that is wonderful too......
My late father's favourite author - my personal choices are Requiem for a Wren and On the Beach (have box of tissues handy) Wonderful wonderful author. In fact I think I may abandon what I am reading now and revert to Nevil..!
It's a great film BOO, but it ends part way through the book! Read the book - it is brilliant, and you do find out why it is called ' A Town Like Alice'.
