When Citing books with volume numbers, is their supposed to be a period before the volume number is written?

Assuming you mean Vol. 1, Vol. XX, etc., rather than Volume. 1, then the convention, generally, with contractions is that if you only use the first syllable or two of the word then, yes, you have a full point. If, however, your contraction contains the first and last letters, then you don't. So, for example, Vol. 2, but Vols 2 and 5; or one editor is (ed.), two or more is (eds).
