He's Thane of Glamis at the start of the play, so presumably that's the title (although it's never stated explicitly that it's inherited).
As Maxi says, the play itself does not make it utterly clear that the title, Thane of Glamis, was inherited. However, it was, as you will see if you click here. That will link you to a web-page which deals with the kings of Scotland. Once there, scroll down to the section headed 'Macbeth (1040 - 1057)'.

Macbeth himself does say in the play: "By Sinel's death I know I am Thane of Glamis", so - since it would surely have passed to a son - it's hard to see how he could have acquired the title other than by inheritance...ie Sinel was Macbeth's father.
