Desperate to find book

I read a book in the mid to late 1980's that I'm desparate to find for my brother, who put me on to it originally.

The plot centres around a guy that dies fairly young, but is then re-born with all the knowledge from his previous life. This happens over & over again, but each time he dies at a slightly lower age. He finally meets a woman that has the same thing happening to her by directing Star Wars himself, when she knows that it should be by Lucas.

Anyone any ideas??
