I read this book about 7 years ago. In the first chapter a young woman is
taken in by three prospectors(two brothers and an "old timer") and they
are snowed in for the winter. Both brothers fall in love with her. She
flees the following spring pregnant.

Later on in the book she rescues her opium addicted daughter from a mental
asylam during the Great Chicargo Fire in October 1871.
