They burn the books

As piggling says, the fireman's job is to burn books. This is the crux of the book, 451 degrees fahrenheit being the temperature, apparently, at which paper burns. It does actually outline the fireman's job within the book, so I suggest you read it again and locate the passages that tell you this. If you're doing this for an exam, then you'll need to arm yourself with a few quotes.
