Famous book called Leop***?

I am trying to track down a book I have seen mentioned as beling a really good read. Its about a small town, set in the past, with everyday lives of the towns people. The author could be Don de ?? I had a quick look at Don delillo's books but no luck. The title could be a word like 'leopard'.

There is alsp a film of the book, directed by the great Luchino Visconti, and starring Burt Lancaster.
