I think the "classics" of western fiction still are the best reads.  Any novel by Louis LaMour, especially the Sackett series, captures the feel of the Old West.  Arguably the first western novel was The Virginian by Owen Wister and is still the benchmark by which others are measured.  (I hope you were asking about "Cowboy" western novels and not western literature in general...

Enjoy!

The Virginian by Owen Wister - the telly series was based on it but not half as good!  And  Riders of The Purple Sage by Zane Gray - excellent
Look at the western novels of Larry Mcmurtry they all great reads.

If you are looking for some good western fiction try The MIssing or Prince of the Plains.  Anything by Elmer Kelton or Larry McMurtry (except the Sin Killer series) is a good read.  For western writing from a female point of view, Michelle Black is a good choice.
