Last year I worked for a company and I got on really with a guy who worked in my office.

I felt there was chemistry and a mutual attraction. By the time I realised this I actually left the company.

When I resigned I gave 4 weeks notice. This guy I liked suggested I read this book that he thought that I would enjoy.

On my 2nd to last week he was on leave for 2 weeks which meant that I would not see him when he returned.

The day before his holiday (so my second to last week) he said for me to have a good birthday although never mentioned anything about me leaving.

A few months later he wrote on my facebook wall "hi how are things, could I have my book back".

This surprised me because it took him 4 months to ask this and I do feel it was an excuse. I still feel he leant me the book as an excuse. At work his body language suggested to me he was interested although he was shy and younger than me.

He's currently travelling and we are still facebook friends. I know he's back soon and this makes me think about him.

Again he's young and this makes me feel like he doesn't have confidence to just contact me...

well, who knows? but in my opinion, taking 4 months to say "hi how are things, could I have my book back" doesn't seem particularly encouraging to me.

but you never know. does he want to meet or are you supposed to post it? I think you'll have a better idea once you know.

I would contact him on facebook, ask him if he had a good holiday. You could then suggest that you meet up, so that you could return the book. You could always say you miss working with him, and see how he reacts, You have nothing to loose, and you never know what might happen.

It doesn't sound like an excuse to me and I think he just wants his book back. Offer to post it or meet in person and see which he chooses and you should have your answer.
