One was a series of books about a village priest in Italy, in the valley of the River Po. All were short stories within each book. This was made into a TV series.
The other was about a young lad called Emil set in France, a Just William type of lad. Any ideas, please? Thanks

There's a book by Romain Gary about a young boy in Paris but he's called Momo. However, Gary wrote it under the pseudonym of Emile Ajar, so maybe that's where you got the 'Emil'? The book has been published under different titles: 'Momo' and 'The Life Before Us'. I read it years ago and I remember it as rather dark so I don't really believe it's the one you're looking for.
Our own Swedish Emil of Lönneberga comes to mind, he is VERY MUCH the Just William type of lad - but certainly not a citizen of Paris, so... There have however been lots of adaptations of Astrid Lindgrens books so who knows, perhaps there a French Emil on the loose... http://en.wikipedia.o...mil_i_L%C3%B6nneberga

Erm... will the real swedeheart please stand up... oi, I'm swedeheart, why are you speaking as if you were me, cherrychapstick?? (But you got it about right - I would have said something similar...!)
Astrid Lindgren has written some brilliant books. She's Pippi Longstocking's "mother" but also the mother of Emil, Madicken (Maggie in the UK: You're Out of Your Mind, Maggie) and many others. Many readers consider Mio, My Son to be her finest work http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mio,_My_Son I don't think your grandchildren would be disappointed with her books, kia cat.
cherrychapstick, I think I can see now what happened - you thought kia cat was answering you, when in fact you were both x-posting...? And then you thought she said 'sweetheart', not 'swedeheart'? Still doesn't explain what hard work you thought she was thanking you for though, ha ha... but that's okay, I'm more confused than anyone so I can sympathize. Hope your daughter's limerick declamation went well the other day :)
