Overrated Intelligence Of Aliens?

I'm not asking if aliens exist, I'm assuming the existence of aliens, the aliens of countless appearances worldwide and throughout time - the 2 legs, arms humanlike features etc. What I wanted to know is why do people assume that aliens are intelligent? There is this belief that they are superior to humans. Is it because of their flying technology and that they can transcend space at such speed. I mean how do we know that the material of their UFO's is not readily available on their planet? Or biologically they can adapt to different atmospheric conditions readily? That doesn't necessarily imply that the UFO inhabitants are anymore intelligent than us? If we had say metallic material that could float, we would no doubt have the whole of the Universe mapped out by now?
I was wondering this because assuming there was/is an alien in Roswell and how about the much hushed up incident on Shikoku Island in 2008 (suggestion of an alien carted off) how come none of their 'kind' have been to retrieve them? And how many, many reports are we going to hear of medical examinations - I mean how many examinations are they going to continually carry out from God knows how long these stories have been around? With intelligence comes curiosity but one has to really ask - are aliens really as intelligent as we give them credit for? Aren't we, humans the most intelligent beings in the Universe?

Who is overrating "alien intelligence"?
If you assume the existence of life in the universe is "teeming", as per Drake's formula, then there could surely be a whole range on the intelligence scale.
If you're referring specifically to the aliens that have visited us, perhaps Mulder and Scully would have the answer.
As for humans being the most intelligent in the universe! A tad arrogant or what!!!

Truth is that U.F.O sightings are relatively recent, it is only since we've been able to travel into space that such things have been sighted.
Ask yourself how many U.F.O sightings were there in the 19th century?
There was a huge amount of media available to report such things, there wasn't a plane in the sky, there was no light pollution to speak of, there were lots of astronmers studying the stars, every sailor had to shoot the moon to get a bearing and of course there were lots of shepherds guarding their flocks at night.
Yet noone saw a thing, why?
They saw lots of ghosts, why?
Perhaps they believed in ghosts before they saw them, consequently people who already believe in U.F.Os tend to see them.

You need a lot more than a floating metal to be able to cross light years of space.
Ignoring the other challenges of physics live actually going fast enough you have to be self sufficient in space (something that we find difficult for more than a year or so) you have to be able to navigate, know where to go and protect yourself from solar and cosmic radiation during long space flights.
Any Alien that got to Earth has by definition to be pretty significantly more advanced than us from a technology point of view.
Not so a broadcast, and given the distances involved I personally doubt whether we will ever get to meet an alien. A broadcast however is another matter - I'd give you evens on that over the lifetime of humanity.

Looking at statististical probabilities, there are probably billions of plants supporting life within the universe. It's also statistically extremely unlikely (probably about the same odds as winning the lottery, with exactly the same line of numbers, every week throughout an entire millennium) that we're the most intelligent life-form.
The majority of 'aliens' would probably view us in the same way that we see amoeba.

I'm not being arrogant Jason. I am in the mood to stand up for humankind. It's 2010, why not? I do think we are the most intelligent beings in the Universe. It is the lack of evidence that brings me to this conclusion. Everton, UFO sightings and abduction go way back, google it (1897 onwards), there are loads of stories. And there are suggestions that paintings etc allude to UFO's. And - irrefutable evidence here - my sister, a total non-believer of alien existence - the most practical and most critical person one can ever meet - has seen a UFO. She is absolutely convinced it was a UFO. There is no refuting that.
Jake I disagree with you, if there is material available that allows for this possibility, it is a possibility. As Jno says maybe we haven't discovered the material that could push our boundaries. Look at the technological age already - internet, mobiles, plasma's etc in the last 20 years. There is alien life but they are not as intelligent as we make out - we shouldn't be so deluded. It is like meeting someone with a few degrees - it doesn't make them more intelligent - just persistent and ultimately knowlegeable but intelligent?, I don't necessarily think so. I think Jake you should go out of space and tell these aliens to cut out the medical experiements and visits if they haven't figured us out yet how many more centuries do they need?

The earth is very young in comparison to other areas of the universe. It follows, therefore, that there could have been technologically advanced civilisations in existence long before the earth was formed. Conversely, on other planets, life could just be beginning. If we could see examples of all life that exists, I believe it would range from a very basic lifeform to civilisations capable of technology that would seriously blow our minds.

Zac It may be alittle too much cooking sherry? It's one of those mysteries. I was just wondering why aliens are so quiet? You know its just something we should think about once in a while. Although I think funding in this area in Britain has been cut? But it is important. Our little planet is orderly floating around in a huge Universe, we should occasionally wonder what our neighbours are up to?
