Moreover, I have seen one reference which suggests that originally the colours were the opposite of the current practice - ie pink for boys, blue for girls. After all, there's nothing intrinsically feminine about pink, or masculine about blue - eg many military uniforms were red in the 19th century;and the traditional colour for nurses' uniform is blue.
