recommend a book - please !

I need a holiday book ...

A pacey thriller ... not too heavy ... something to dip in and out of ...

... of the Dean Koontz, Robert Goddard, sort of variety.

Any recommendations, please ?

I have about 10 books on the go at the moment, but none of them is really a "holiday" book. I want something that can live in my backpack for a week.

Not heard of Kathy Reichs craft so just googled. Her novels sound similiar to the Kay Scarpettas so think I might have to try them. Like a bit of CSI on tv as well.

Have you tried the books by C J Sansom JJ. tThey are medieval who dunnits and the historical detail seems good. Try to go with the books sequentially if you can. I must say I enjoyed them

Is that the series of books of which Revaltions (I think that's what it's called - hunchback lawyer chap?) is a part of Rosetta? If so, then spot on and that's an absolutely brilliant set of reads too.

Sound good to me Rosetta. Some good suggestions tonight I may have a look at, although I had promised myself since moving I would re-read my Stephen Kings. We've had to downsize and have to get rid of some of the books as I have no room for any more.

Apart from the Shardlake series C J Sansom has also written a book entitled Winter in Madrid Set in Spain just after the civil war .Quite brilliant .
I've just read The Man from Beijing by Henning Mankell .That'll keep you occupied for a good week .Very involved political thriller .

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry

This book is a masterpiece and it took me by surprise. India, a country I knew little about, haunts me since reading this book. The author captures on paper the feeling of India on every page. The sounds, the smells and the people stay with me well after the last page was turned.

The writing is beautiful and brings new understanding about India's struggles with poverty and caste systems. The bitter-sweet cultures and traditions are displayed through this story using 4 main characters and involving many background characters to make this book so realistic that as a reader, I felt like I actually visited this country and knew the characters. I didn't always like some of the characters but I could feel their sadness, their fright, their loss and sorrow, and even their desire to make it. Unforgettable characters that evoke every type of emotion!

Panic ... I like to have books of different types on the go. The ones I've run out of are "shove in your bag" books ... like an easy reading thriller, that you can pull out whenever you stop for a coffee.

Ro ... funny you should suggest a "mediaeval whodunnit" ... my favourite novel is The Name Of The Rose !!

As we both live in Brighton, what about Peter James books? His inspector Roy Grace books are excellent.

Any Book by Tom Bradby (also BBCTV reporter) The White Russian or the Master of Rain are good. Lee Child also a decent author.

Hi Jayne, They're all called DEAD something. Start with his first one Dead Simple, then Looking good dead, then Not dead enough, then Dead man's footsteps, then Dead tomorrow. His next one due in June, is dead like you. Start with dead simple though if you can get it. I don't think you'll regret it. They're really GRIPPING and all set in and around the Brighton area. Many charity shops have them in paperback. Good luck. I really hope you like them as much as I do.

I try to buy books from bookshops only, except as a last resort.
