Royal Family - Order of Succession
The present order seems to be as follows:-
1. The Prince of Wales
2. Prince William of Wales
3. Prince Henry (Harry) of Wales
4. The Duke of York
5. Princess Beatrice of York
6. Princess Eugenie of York
7. Prince Edward
8. Lady Louise Windsor, daughter of (7)
9. The Princess Royal
10. Peter Phillips
The question I ask is this. A son was born to Prince Edward & The Countess of Wessex in 2007 who now basks in the title James, Viscount Severn. Why is he not ranked 8th? He appears not to be in the top 25, with individuals like Master Arthur Chatto and his brother Master Samuel Chatto occupying 17th and 16th places respectively.

Found this, which points to him being 8th in Line. Debretts is likely to be correct.

Thanks for the answers. I did check wikipedia and see that he is 8th in line.
The information I have is taken from p. 178 of The Penguin Books of Facts ed. David Crystal, reprinted in 2008. This appears to be a mistake then. A bad mistake to make.
Oddly enough, it was a question on a daytime UK TV game show This week "The Chase" which posed the question who is "Who is 11th in line to the British throne?" The correct answer was Zara Phillips. If James, Viscount Severn is 8th, then Zara Phillips will be relegated to 12th in line. So they too were wrong. Perhaps they were using the aforementioned PBOF. I distinctly remember one of the contestants being v. surprised.
