Have you read Lady Chatterley's Lover and if so did you think it was obscene! According to todays debauchery it was quite mild! I watched The Chatterley Affair last night on BBC4 and it was quite pornographic with explicit scenes and language ! The novel left all to the imagination!

I have read it and no, I don't think it's obscene. It's well written and much of 'action' is implied rather than explicitly written. But I'm a fairly broad-minded individual and in any case people's sensibilities were quite different in 1928 when it was first published. In those days 'decent' people didn't talk about sex outside the (marital) bedroom and they certainly didn't write or read about it, let alone when the plot had such an obvious cross-class dimension.

I didn't see The Chatterley Affair, so I can't comment on that.

I remember in 1960 when there was such a furore about it and the obscenity trial took place - I can't remember which Sunday paper published it in serial form in a centre-page pull-out. I was in my early teens and my father expressly told me that I was not to read it. Being an obedient child (and not curious about that sort of thing in those days), I didn't.

I, for one, can certainly believe that you do not have to suffer 'unwanted attention', thereby enabling you to maintain your high moral standards..........

In the 1960's my workmate and I bought the book between us, we thought it was quite racy then, I was about 17 or so and quite innocent really. The book was certainly not in your face like some of todays books.
