in any of the harry potter books, has harry ever had a girlfriend?  just a discussion we were having on the matter

Harry got a fairly major crush on a ravenclaw student - Cho Chang in book 3. In the fourth book he asked her out but was turned down as she was already going to the Yule Ball with Cedric Diggory - whom she subsequently dated.

He did have a date for the Yule Ball but an entirely non romantic one.

In the fifth book Harry finally gets his first kiss with Cho and even goes out with her on Valentines day but things fall apart pretty quickly.

Given the age at which JKRs readership starts I would expect Harry to continue to have a pretty chaste adolesence as a full on romance would probably be considered unsuitable for some of her readers.

Harry and Ginny finally get together in book six, they have a really strong, serious relationship but he breaks up with her towards the end in order to protect her from Voldemort, as he knows that he might use people close to harry to hurt him. they finish on a mutual understanding but we all know their gonna get it together after harry saves the world...
