to kindle or not to kindle?

i love books - the smell, the feel etc., and so feel that i should disapprove of 'kindling'.
And yet they are so intriguing!

I wouldnt personally, I prefer books and if I wanted to buy a kindle I would probably buy an ipad and download the kindle app

I too love books and thought that nothing could replace them. Then I was given a sony ereader as a gift and I love it. I still read the occasional paperback, I'll never truly abandon them, but more often than not I can be found curled up on the sofa, ereader in hand.
The Kindle looks an exciting product and will be on my Christmas list.

I don't see myself getting one but they sound quite useful for holidays - packing one book-sized object with lots of readling loaded onto it, rather than several paperbacks, should save weight and space.

I have one. The novelty wears off. Plus, I was spending a lot of money on books when I normally go to the library. It was a joint gift for my 40th birthday, so I am sure to mention it a lot when in the company of the gift givers. I really like it, but it can be costly even after the initial purchase.

we're looking into getting an apple ipad, one of the facilities is to use it like a kindle.
i too love books, never, ever get rid of them and they're slowly taking over the house. and whilst i never get rid of them, i rarely re-read them although i do pass them on to a friend to read but always get them back! we also go away on long trips which means taking a huge bag full of books to read - usually 12-15 books each, which is a heavy load to cart around europe.
sooo, i'm reserving judgement at the moment. an electronic book could be an answer to the storage/carrying problem or it could be a total waste of money. time, for us, will tell.

I can't believe the advert for the kindle. Surely the one place you wouldn't take one to is the beach ?

You'd be scared to death of it getting wet, getting sand in it, or being stolen.

Surely it's much better to take an old battered paperback.

To anyone that is thinking of e-books (Ethandron) and buying an ipad. ipads are great for ebook reading as long as you are indoors. The projection of the image on the screen will suffer badly from glare. The Kindle can be used indoors/outdoors without the glare due to the format and projection differences(I don't understand the technicalities) common in laptops and ipads. Hope this helps you decide.
