Hello Jem, I am a professional artist & the answer to your question is quite simple. Go to everything you can and decide what you (contrary to popular thought) `like`. I sell my work from £70.00 to £13.000 at the moment. If someone wants something from me but can't afford it then I, like most artists, will try to find a way to provide rather than put off. I am from Swindon and this town has a very important collection. Years ago a chap from the GWR pension fund `invested` in cheap works by unknown artists of the time...Lowry, Laura Knight, Henry Moore etc; These investments were bought because he `liked` them. They have for decades provided the pension profits for thousands of employees in the GWR works! One of my own works that I keep for myself alone, a favourite in other words, is a small oil on board that took me an hour to paint worth about £100 so, look, select, and ASK. (Art students are not the best place to look however as I would cringe at knowing someone bought one of my student year efforts HA HA) Good hunting www.steviegilmore.com
