Following on from a comment made by haggisdj on another thread (asking about the stars on Man City's badge), I wondered when the custom of placing these stars for trophies won started. I remember Chelsea had two stars on their badge from the beginning of the 1971/72 season to represent FA Cup victory in 1970 and ECWC in 1971. Is this the earliest example?

Thanks for that, redman. On reflection, I remember Chelsea had an FA Cup design alongside the badge for the 1970/71 season to recognise their first victory in the competition. It was replaced by the stars the following season. Thanks again.
