ABH Sentence

My friend was charged with common assault (ABH) and was sentenced to 6 months imprisoment so he will be serving 3 months as the sentenced gets halfed. however before his sentence he was kept in remand for 2 months until his sentence day, why is it the time he spent in remand is not getting reduced from his sentence and he has to do the whole 3 months again meaning all together he will be serving 5 months. I am confused with this because i thought the time you spend in remand gets taken off your sentence. can anyone tell me why that time is not getting reduced for him.

That was a long sentence- nearly 80 words.
Is it correct to say all sentences are halved?

well all i no in the UK the sentences are halved but do you no why the time spent in remand is not getting reduced from the sentence

if all sentences are halved then whats the point of halving it? why not just give the half?

perhaps he is actually having to do the whole thing and the 2 months has been considered?
