Poetry recommendation for civil partnership
7 Answers
My cousin is marrying her girlfriend (of 20 years), and they are both very dear to me. I would like to recite a piece of poetry at the ceremony. They are both in their 50s and were Oxford lecturers in English, so I am looking for something not too 'obvious'... I'd also like it to be a piece by a woman.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

The words of Eileen Caddy in Footprints on the Path are a worthy guide for those who wish to succeed in marriage.
The secret of making something work in your lives is,
first of all,
The deep desire to make it work:
Then the faith and belief that it can work:
Then to hold that clear definite vision in your consciousness and see it working out step by step,
without one thought off doubt or disbelief.

The words of Kahlil Gibran as The Prophet speak of love in this way.
“When you love you should not say,
“God is in my heart,” but rather,
“I am in the heart of God.”
“And think not that you can direct the course of love,
For love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
“Love has no desire but to fulfil itself.
“… if you love, …… , let these be your desires:
“To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
“To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving:
“To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;
“To return home at eventide with gratitude;
“And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.”
