How do I back-up tunes from iPod to iTunes on PC?

Had iTunes on hubby's laptop but it crashed last week and he had to wipe everything and take it back to factory settings so I lost iTunes!!
Is there a quick way to reload my music from my iPod back to my iTunes? I phoned Apple/iTunes Support but they said you can only upload iTunes PURCHASES from your iPod and not music that you've downloaded yourself, due to Copyright Laws!
Anyone else know an easier method?

This has happened to me at least 3 times, I emailed iTunes via their website asking whether they can de-authorise my previous accounts and then signed on to my new computer. This transfers any music you purchased to your new computer. I hope this works for you
