I dyed my hair purple with a swartscof xxl and it faded to a reddy gingery colour with about two weeks, I went and bought a professional colour and although not as bad it is doing pretty much the same thing. Do all of these bright colours fade so drastically?

It depends how much you prepared your hair beforehand - and it does your hair no good at all to keep colouring vividly, IMO. Go to a hair salon and ask their advice - it could be the general condition of your hair which is causing dye to fade off quickly.

It's not one of them bright bright colours which require you to bleach your hair first. It was natural light brown before dying and dyed to a dark brown purple colour. I am asking here (hoping there's a qualified hair technician) to save me the expense of going to the hairdressers.
Hello Sacha.
I've been colouring my hair purple for a couple of months, using the same brand as you. I've been using L'Oreal Elvive Shampoo & Conditioner for coloured hair (in red bottles), have cut down on the amount of times I wash my hair and don't use water that's too hot. Seems to make the colour stay on for longer, but don't think there's much more you can do to make it last, although I'm by no means an expert on colouring hair, so will be interesting to hear from someone who is :-)
Your hair has been bleached to accept your tint. Shampoos & conditioners for tinted hair will preserve tint but sunshine fades colour. Leave-in mousse tints help between re-tinting.
