I’m 23 and have had hormonal acne since I was 13. It is nowhere near as bad as it was when I was that age but it’s still there and still very noticeable. When I was in my teens the dermatologist recommended me to use roaccutane but at the time my mum wouldn’t let me because of the possible bad side effects. At my age now it really bothers me, but the doctor is now saying it’s not severe enough for roaccutane. I don’t want creams as they are not sorting out the hormonal imbalance that is causing the acne in the first place. So, are there any other treatments that will fully cure my acne by rectifying my hormonal inbalance? Thanks

Roaccutane (Isotretinoin) is one of the most effective treatments for acne but is contraindicated in anyone with anxiety or depression and can cause suicidal thoughts.

Other options would be long-term courses of antibiotics such as Erithromycin and Doxycycline - the effects of which are quite variable from person to person - and topical retinoids.

My son had quite bad acne as a teenager. He was given a long term antibiotic, which did the trick. Also a topical cream.
