This may be the wrong place for this but:
A friend of my wife bought some hair straighteners in the USA. She wan't to know how to get them to work here in England. I don't think it is just a matter of changing the plug.

I don't think they will works as the voltage is totally different. My GHD's would work in the USA even with a voltage adaptor plug! You could try one of those but I don't think they will work as well as what they should.

You need to purchase a USA to UK Step-up transformer. You can pick them up from places like Maplins for about �30.
