Nail Biting and Olive Oil
12 Answers
I've always bitten my nails but with my son's wedding taking place in a few weeks, I made enquiries on having extensions. It's just about possible on my little stumps of nail but the girl suggested I rub olive oil into the cuticles and fingertips to soften the skin and push back the cuticles. I've been rubbing in the olive oil liberally and my question is - is it possible to absorb calories from the oil in this way?

Foxlee ...you surprise me ! Don't bite your nails ...it's unhygienic and looks awful. Get some nail hardener and paint that on ..for god's sake ..stop chewing ! Use a good handcream all the time, rubber gloves for housework ,keep them filed neatly and as for nail extensions....,quick fix but very expensive upkeep...and not good for your natural nail growth ..
As for absorbing calories from something you rub into your nails ...leave off !

Thanks for all YOUR advice shaneystar. I hit my sixties last year so don't really think my habit is going to change. I've tried all the horrible things for painting on your nails - they work to a degree but when you go to eat something, your fingers touch your lips and it's not very pleasant. The extensions are not dear - 35 - and as I said, just for the occasion of my son's wedding. As long as they stay put for that occasion, I'm not bothered but if they do stay on for a bit longer, it will give my nails a chance to grow.
As for absorbing calories from something you rub into your skin, it was just a passing thought as I slathered on the olive oil. I'll try the almond oil. Thanks for the tip.

i have no ida if it get absorbed, but almond oil will be just as calorific. Don't give up re: your nails. I have bitten mine for 30 odd years, then last winter decided to get some gel extensions on a whim ... by the time they fell off a mnth later, my underneath nails were long enough that i didnt want to bite them, and now i have lovely nails!

Well if they are for this special occasion then I would say go ahead and get them done ..and perhaps the fact that they look nice will deter you from all these years of nail biting :) If ,as bednobs says ,once they come off and you have some growth underneath then keep up the good work and look after them.Treat yourself to a manicure now and again. Bitten nails look awful. .Whatever you decide have a lovely day and enjoy yourself at the wedding.
Get the extensions, they will look great, doesnt matter how bitten the nails are, they can do it, dont go for extra long ones as you wont be able to cope, the most natural ones are normal size and a "french manicure" looks good on first timers- thata where they paint a white line across the top.
But if you want to go real fancy, take the wedding outfit top or skirt with you and get them to match up the colour for your nails and have air brush design on them. loads to look at and choose if you go to one of the new nail shops where the Vietnamese work and their work is far superior to the British nail salons I have to admit, also for sheer luxury have your toe nails painted just in the plain colour you chose, costs more but its a once off wedding, then if you wear open strap sandals you will look real good.
Only have the work done one week before the wedding, later than that if possible, your own nails do grow underneath and after three weeks you will have to decide whether to go for an infill or take them off.
I have been having mine done for years otherwise I love a good chew at my nails.
Good luck and enjoy the wedding, you wont be sorry you got them done when people start complimenting you.

Thanks for your words of encouragement bednobs, it's good to know that you can break a lifetime bad habit.
Thanks also Dee Sa for your comments. I plan to have the extensions done, just short ones, two days beforehand as the day before we're off to Slovakia and then the wedding takes place the day after in a castle. My dress is a dusky pink that has an antique look so it should be easy to match up the nail varnish colour. Thanks everyone for your good wishes for the wedding.

i had been ill and some of my finger nails had fallen off! (gross i know) when they were growing back they were really short and paper thin. i started using this stuff and a month later i have nice nails again! they are still a little weak but have grown really fast and a lot stronger than before.
:-)
thats gotta be better than rubbing olive oil all over your hands!
