I have been dyeing my hair for over 20 years. I' currently meduim caramel brown. I'm now nearly all grey and sick of covering my roots. How do I get rid of the colour and go grey all over, w/o cutting it all off? Thought I'd strip colour and go v. v. blonde to start but what do I do after that? Help please!!!!

Hi solitude - Go to the hairdressers and get the whole head dyed a silver grey/ whatever shade, they'll have a colour chart. Then just let your roots grow through. xxx
I think the whole head would have to be stripped of the colour as you would not be able to put a lighter dye on top of the colour you have now. I once dyed my hair dark brown and hated it when id done it so it was a trip to the hair dressers for them to strip it, i was in there hours!! However as you have been dying it for 20 years there will be a huge build up of colour so they will probably do it gradually, each time taking it a shade lighter, this way it gentler on the hair and less harsh looking as it is a gradual process.

Hi tx for the answers - hairdressers all said they didn't know (!) so I went with the stripping colour theory today. Now have white blonde roots with auburn ends - eek! Doing it again at the weekend to get the rest of the colour out and then going to try a semi-permanent silver/blonde on top and let it all grow out for the next year or so. Hope it works or I've really just totally screwed up my hair.......No one warns you how difficult it is to go from dark to your natural gray when you start all the colouring do they?
They definately dont warn you of the risks of removing a dark hair dye. It was the worse thing i ever done. My hairdresser told me that she has a client who had dyed her hair black for years and it has taken her 3 years to successfully get it to her natural blonde colour. Glad your getting it sorted though.
