Forgotten to turn of GHD's

hi all,
i've been a real idiot and think I've forgotten to turn off my GHD hair straighteners. i work in london, 25 miles away from home and have spent the whole train journey here, worrying about what will happen if they're still on. they're the old style (i think mk3). the new ones have a special feature that turns them off after 15mins, but what about the older style? has anyone ever done this? my parents are away and i dont know my neighbour's number, so i cant get anyone to pop in and check. is it likely that the fuse will blow or something? i'm not very technically minded!

try and get hold of someone to go and check or go and check yourself.

If they are on, worse case scenario could be a house fire.

I have left mine on a number of times. not GHDs but get to same temp. What have you left them on?

Havent they got an aqutomatic cut out if they overheat ?

No idea what will happen if you have left them on, but I regularly think I have left mine on :( Like you I worry til Im home then always find out that I have switched them off. I think cos you do it automatically you cant remember if you have done it or not.

The older ones do not have a cut off switch that's a relatively new feature. I would find someone/anyone to go round to your house and check.

As long as you have them on a hard surface and not on any soft furnishing, it should be ok. I've left mine on before and also my iron, which was actually on it's end on a sofabed all night, (couldn't be bothered to get ironing board out) Fortunately, both were ok and luckily the iron didn't tip forward onto it's base, otherwise the fabric sofa cover would have probably set light.

I have mine on a wodden shelf, warms shelf up a bit but no fire

The plug of ur GHD has a fuse which will blow if it gets too hot. The problem is where r the heat blades lying. R they away from combustibles.....if so, ur okay.....if not.......'tis a FOSTER tragedy ahead.

jem_bob, either way, I would really do my best to get hold of someone or go home myself, if I were you. It's really not worth it.

I have the mk4s now, but with my old ones, I left them on, on my bed, but on the heatproof mat, for 9 hours. Even through that they had scorched the criss-cross pattern from the back of the mat onto my duvet cover. :(

thanks guys! i couldn't go home as it's a loooong way, but managed to get my poor grandparents to pop round... eek! :-s they were resting on their 'heat proof' case, so hopefully wouldn't have done too much damage. pixi, i think you are SPOT ON... i do this to myself all the time, only to find out they were off the whole time. I fear my grandparents have had a wasted trip, but havent yet phoned to find out. Still, it's better to be safe than sorry! think i may save up for some new mk4's to prevent me torturing myself anymore.

Somebody I know takes their ghd's to work with them in the boot of their car, it's the only way she can reassure herself they have been turned off!!
