Winding Perm with Solution

I'm currently studying Hairdressing and I have finished the Theory delivery for Perming. I have now got assignments and exams, but I am still very confussed about Winding With Solution. I would like to know when and if it's still being used? Does the hair need to be in relatively good condtion and or virgin, to wind with solution?Would you use Alikaline or Acid solution?
Thank you guys for giving me an opportunity to ask questions and get the answers...my educator is a very grumpy, snappy woman, who tells me that I don't need to understand what she delivered, I just need to memorise info for the exmas. So I cannot approach her to ask her to explain what I don't understand...Thanks heaps!!!
