Eye Laser Surgery

I want to get eye laser surgery done. My prescription is -6.5 in both eyes - is this really really bad eyesight? Would I be considered for laser surgery with this prescription?

I had mine done and my worst eye was -4.75, and I know someone who was -11 (yes, really!) and it was a fantastic result for both of us.

I had mine done about 5 years ago and still think it's fab!

My prescription was about the same as yours. So yes, you will be able to find a practice that will consider you, although some may not.

The thing you need to know, is that the higher your prescription, the higher the risk that you wont end up with perfect eye sight. I was given the option of either risking slightly too little time under the laser, and having a residual shortsighted prescription, or going longer and risking going over slightly and becoming slightly long sighted.

Being used to being shortsightedness, i opted for the former. I do have a residual prescription of about -1.5, but although a perfect prescription would have been nice, i am happy wit what i now have.

From not being able to even find where i put my glasses, i can now happily go swimming without wearing glasses or not being able to see where the wall was.

So, its a case of being realistic, and then hopefully, you will be more than happy with the results.

One of the problems associated with a high short-sighted correction like your own is that often this correlates with having thinner corneas. This may restrict the type of surgery that is available to yourself - in turn meaning that the offers of �400 per eye etc may turn out to be more like �1500 per eye.

Both my husband and daughter had laser surgery and have never looked back. My husband had his first 4 yrs ago and then my daughter for her wedding 2 years ago. Don't know the figures but both had terrible eyesight and my daughter was not sure if it would go ahead when she went for surgery on the allotted day. There was much discussion with a specialist in London and it was decided that it would go ahead. Our girl is a right baby but was amazed at the short time it took and the imediate brilliant results. Hope this helps a little.

It doesn't just depend on the strength of your prescription - it also depends on whether it is changing a lot or not.

My eyes are -5 at the minute but clinics will not recommend me for laser surgery because my prescription changes each time I get my eyes tested. Apparently it must be steady for 2-3 tests
